Matthew Holt
Trainee Patent Attorney
Matthew joined Forresters in 2020, and is currently working towards becoming a fully qualified UK and European patent attorney.
Throughout his time at Forresters, Matthew has gained extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting UK and European patent applications, and in working with overseas attorneys to secure patent protection worldwide. Matthew also has experience in preparing validity and freedom-to-operate opinions, and in conducting due diligence exercises.
Matthew works with inventions in the chemical, pharmaceutical and materials fields. Matthew has notable experience working with inventions centred on small molecule therapeutics, battery technology, carbon capture technology, and glass manufacturing and processing.
Matthew has experience working with a wide variety of clients, from individual inventors and start-ups through to large multinational companies.
Matthew holds a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Bristol. His master’s project was in the field of synthetic organic chemistry, investigating new spirocyclic compounds.
Matthew also gained experience in synthetic chemistry outside of academia. During a work placement at a German multinational science and technology company, Matthew made new compounds for use in display coatings and made nanoparticles which were hoped to lead to a new type of liquid crystal display. During a short internship at a British multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company, Matthew made new compounds for use in cancer treatment.
Outside of work, Matthew can usually be found in front of a book, with running shoes on, or with a tennis/badminton racket in hand.
