Riddhi Patel

Trainee Patent Attorney

As a trainee, Riddhi works closely with her supervisor to develop her skills and deliver high standards of work for clients as she progresses towards qualifying as a patent attorney in the UK and Europe. She is now a year into her training and has enjoyed working with patents at all stages from drafting through to grant.

She is a co-lead of IP&ME, a branch of IP Inclusive that is dedicated to creating a safe space for ethnic minorities and allies to celebrate, support and address issues relating to inclusion in the IP profession. She is also part of the CIPA Informals Committee and has led various roles from organising weekly foundation exam lectures to assisting in the student conference for trainees.

Throughout her training, she has gained experience in drafting responses to examination reports in a range of jurisdictions, including Europe, the UK, Japan, USA, Canada and Korea. She has also been fortunate to work with large, global clients within the software and computing space.

With a background in physics, Riddhi has a broad understanding of many technical areas. This ranges from machine learning and semiconductors to biological nanomachine physics. She is passionate about green innovations and technology and has also been able to work with medical and printing-related inventions.

She enjoys the routine of working with larger clients, having previously worked with a number of large global companies. She also enjoys working with small clients and inventors and utilising her knowledge of patent law to help them build strong patent portfolios.

Riddhi graduated from the University of Birmingham with a bachelor’s in physics. One of her key projects at university was to understand sound synthesis, for which she created a karaoke game using MATLAB. Some of Riddhi’s key projects during her studies included using machine learning to optimise a robot’s swing on an actual swing, as well as being involved in a research project where she presented a winning poster on anti-bubbles … and yes, they are as cool as they sound!

Outside of work, Riddhi loves travelling, hiking and reading. She is currently also enjoying flying a drone and learning to read and write her mother tongue, Gujarati.
